Collection Summary: Two miscellaneous record books. The record book in box 5687 lists the following information for each case: party names, post office, description of claim, when sued and in what court, result of suit, officer’s return, amount of claim, amount collected, fees, amount remitted, and remarks. The record book in box 5629 provides: party names, case number, outcome of suit, and whether the fee was paid or not.

Record Group History: According to Article V of the Constitution of 1817, the judicial power of the state was vested in one supreme court and such superior and inferior courts of law and equity as the legislature may from time to time direct. The Constitution of 1832 changed the name of the Supreme Court to the High Court of Errors and Appeals which consisted of three judges. Article V of the Constitution of 1868 changed the name of the state's highest court back to Supreme Court. The Constitution of 1890 maintained a supreme court of three judges but made the office elective.
