Record Group History: This record group contains several state health institutions each of which comprises a subgroup. The following institutions are represented in this record group: State Tubercular Sanatorium, Mississippi School for the Blind, Mississippi School for the Deaf, State Charity Hospital, Mississippi State Hospital (Whitfield), East Mississippi State Hospital (Meridian), Ellisville State School, and King's Daughters Rescue Home (Natchez).
Ellisville State School: In 1920, Governor Lee Russell signed the “Law of Mental Deficiency,” establishing the “Mississippi School and Colony for the Feebleminded.” A site south of Ellisville, Mississippi was selected, and the institution was opened in January 1921. The original colony consisted of eight people who transferred from Mississippi State Hospital. The first school opened on campus in 1922, with 20 of the 80 people on campus attending classes. Those who lived there also worked in the houses, laundry, farm, and garden areas. The population increased to 102 (all males) by 1923. The first female dormitory was constructed in 1928, and in 1929 the population increased to 51 males and 88 females. In 1929, the name of the institution changed to Ellisville State School.
