Muster-in and muster-out rolls compiled during the Spanish-American War. Each company in the three Mississippi volunteer infantry regiments was required to complete three copies of the muster-in roll. Of these three copies, one went to the U.S. Army Adjutant General, one to the Mississippi adjutant general, and one was kept by the company commander. Each company in the three Mississippi volunteer infantry regiments was required to complete five copies of the muster-out roll. Of the five copies, one went to the U.S. War Department, two to the local paymaster, one to the State Adjutant General, and the company commander kept one. Recorded information includes each soldier’s name, rank, date and place of mustering in and out, ranking officer, age, complexion, color of hair and eyes, where born, occupation, residence, marital status, next of kin (name and address), and any remarks. Commissioned and non-commissioned officers are listed in order of rank; privates are listed alphabetically. Information is organized chronologically.
