The Commission does not have the authority to regulate the personal behavior of public officials and instead concerns itself with investigating economic conflicts of interest. The Ethics Commission was additionally granted the authority to look into campaign finance violations during the 2017 session of the Mississippi Legislature. The Commission is empowered to seek court orders for campaign finances documents and enforce the availability of public records.
