Collection Summary: The collection mostly consists of minutes from the Department of Marine Resources’ monthly commission meetings as well as a smaller number of miscellaneous files related to the Department of Marine Resources. Some of the minutes predate the creation of the Department of Marine Resources as an independent state agency and are labeled variously as “The Commission on Wildlife Conservation”, The Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks”, and The Commission on Marine Resources” depending on the year. The additional assorted files cover correspondence between department staff and outside agencies and some project files. The collection also includes some recordings of the Commission on Marine Resources. The meetings from the years 1997 and 2001-2005 are available as audio cassettes and the meetings from the years 2001-2005 were also recorded on VHS.

Record Group History: The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources was created in 1994 as an offshoot of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. The department is charged with the development and conservation of Mississippi’s marine resources and is assisted by the Mississippi Advisory Commission on Marine Resources in achieving their departmental goals. In order to protect Mississippi’s marine resources, the department ensures that federal and state laws regarding marine resources are being properly enforced and that the state’s marine resources are maintained for the long-term benefit of Mississippi.
