Series 327: Cash and Account Books. 1838-1962. Auditor (RG 29).

An assortment of cash and account notebooks from the Office of the State Auditor. 

Box 19532. Cash ledger dated 1838 to 1841 for public accounts managed by the State Auditor. The accounts include: state capitol, judiciary, seminary lands, appropriations, penitentiary, hawkers & peddlers, legislative, militia, and contingent fund.  Box 3879. Statement Book of Funded Debt. Dated 1840 to 1846, the book lists the date, person “in whose favour issued,” voucher number, amount (two, four, and six years), total amount, and department. 

Box 3889. Two ledgers. First ledger has a list of witnesses for court cases with distance traveled on page eight and nine, while the remainder of the ledger is a monthly account of auditor pay warrants outstanding, issued, and paid. The second ledger is labeled “Executive Chamber Account Book” and dates from 1844 to 1865. The book is a recording of the executive contingent fund account which included expenses such as repairs of the governor’s mansion or militias. 

Box 4164. General Fund, Cash Balance Registered by Departments, dated 1938 to 1962. Information listed includes: old total, date, warrants & receipts, debit, credit, and total. 

Box 3876. The first ledger is an Advances on Cotton Notebook, dated 1862 to 1863. The ledger is mostly numbers listed in columns titled with roman numerals (I, II ½, III, etc.) with little explanatory text. The second ledger in Box 3876 is dated 1912 to 1913 and consists of balance sheets for various state taxes. Box 3868. Four ledgers. First ledger is dated 1896 to 1899, and contains a list of names with check marks and Mississippi cities. No other context is provided. The second ledger is titled “Auditor’s Fees & County Taxes for Land Redemptions” and is dated 1875 to 1877. The ledger is separated by county and contains the date, who purchased the land, and county and teachers taxes. The third ledger is titled “Land Department” and is dated 1882. It has an index, and balance sheets for lands purchased. It has the date, name, and payment listed. The fourth ledger has “Land Sales, 1904” written on its front cover. It has the county, date, warrant number, name, and amount paid listed. 

Box 3878. Excise Tax Cash Book. Ledger book for state excise and gasoline taxes, dated 1922. Ledger contains the following data: counties, gross receipts and amount due each county, net amount due counties, gross receipts and expenses for highway commission, and net amount due highway commission.
