Collection Summary: A varied collection of records related to levee taxes on lands on lands sold or forfeited to the state. Box 29520 consists of lists of taxes on levee lands for Bolivar, Issaquena, Quitman, Sharkey, Sunflower, Tunica, and Washington Counties. Box 03441 has land sales and redemptions receipts. Box 30283 has lists of land sales, land sales and redemptions. Box 29512 has recapitulations, and levee tax lists. Box 29513 has levee tax deeds and land sales receipts. Box 03883 is a bound Yazoo MS Delta Levee Privilege Tax Ledger dated 1906-1912. Box 03269 has land sale receipts.

Record Group History: When Mississippi became a state in 1817, the office of the auditor was enumerated as part of the executive branch in Article IV, Section 25, of the 1817 Constitution. The 1832 Constitution stipulated that the auditor was to be popularly elected to serve a two-year term, while the 1869 Constitution extended the term to four years.  In the modern era, the state auditor is responsible for auditing state agencies, county governments, school districts, and higher educational institutions. The office also: conducts data audits for public schools and monitors state agencies' inventory, advises local governments on accounting matters in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, and investigates misuse of public funds.
