Collection Title: Series 346:  Motor Vehicle Records.  1912-1932.

Creator: Office of the State Auditor (RG 29)

Collection Summary: These motor vehicle records consist of two basic types:  ledgers and registers.  The ledgers are simply records of fees collected for car tags, arranged by county. The names of the county tax collectors are sometimes included in these, but they contain no other information besides financial data. The registers of motor vehicles (including motorcycles) are far more varied in the types of information they record. They contain the name of the owner, owner’s city or county of residence, the make of the auto, its model or type, and its factory number. Certain registers contain even more detailed information, such as the name of the selling agent or business, and by what means the vehicle is powered (gas, steam, or electricity).

Record Group History: When Mississippi became a state in 1817, the office of the auditor was enumerated as part of the executive branch in Article IV, Section 25, of the 1817 Constitution. The 1832 Constitution stipulated that the auditor was to be popularly elected to serve a two-year term, while the 1869 Constitution extended the term to four years.  In the modern era, the state auditor is responsible for auditing state agencies, county governments, school districts, and higher educational institutions. The office also: conducts data audits for public schools and monitors state agencies' inventory, advises local governments on accounting matters in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, and investigates misuse of public funds.
