Collection Summary: Correspondence, forms, and other papers related to discharges, furloughs, and exemptions from Confederate or state military service. The documents typically give the name of the man, his physical description, and reason for exemption. Also included are petitions to the governor from destitute families seeking discharges or leaves of absence for relatives in the service; petitions from residents of communities seeking exemption from service for certain individuals; a list of men exempted from service in Mississippi, including reason for exemption; and a list of men detailed to vital wartime civilian occupations.
