Series 400: Adjutants General Correspondence. 1861-1864

Collection Summary: Incoming correspondence between various Mississippi adjutants generals from 1861-1864. Additionally included is a letterbook containing copies of outgoing correspondence of Adjutant-General Jones S. Hamilton from the dates of June 25, 1862, to September 2, 1863. The incoming correspondence concerns a variety of topics including supplies furnished by the state, the enlistment of troops, officers’ commissions, questions of military etiquette and law, and the possibility of trading with Union forces for civilian necessities. The outgoing correspondence primarily concerns Mississippi state troops and is administrative in nature.
Access Restrictions: Access to the original copies of Jones S. Hamilton’s correspondence is restricted due to their fragile nature, however photocopies of the material are available. To access the original material an application for access, with justification, must be submitted to a Government Records archivist.
