Collection Summary: Drawing by William R. Scott of his plan for a proposed ironclad naval vessel equipped with a steam-powered battering ram, with correspondence relating thereto, and a reduced photostatic copy of the drawing. The correspondence includes the following items: (1) a letter from Scott in Charleston, South Carolina, to Mississippi Governor John J. Pettus, seeking his endorsement of the plan, December 20, 1862; (2) a copy of the minutes of a sub-commission of South Carolina’s state commission on submarine batteries and torpedoes, called in October of 1862 for consideration of Scott’s design, which include transcriptions of several letters of endorsement; (3) a letter to Pettus from the Navy Department in Richmond, in which consideration of the plans is endorsed, July 4, 1862; and (4) a letter from Scott in Wilmington, North Carolina, to Pettus, enclosing the drawing and a copy of the Navy Department report concerning the vessel, July 29, 1862.
