Collection Summary: Collection of applications for land grants to the Mississippi territorial government and records of the payments received. The applications in the collection cover land from the “Huntsville”, “Nashville”, “St. Stephens”, and “West of Pearl River” territorial districts.

Record Group History: The office of secretary of state was created by the Constitution of 1817. Responsibilities of the office included: keeping a register of all official acts and proceedings of the governor, receiving election returns of the people and delivering them to the House of Representatives, and attesting Governor's commissions. Additionally, the secretary of state keeps a record of all domestic and foreign charters of corporations, the originals of all laws passed, and the bonds of all state officers and districts of the state except his own, which is kept by the clerk of the Supreme Court.  The secretary of state also has all laws and departmental reports published and is responsible for keeping the Capitol in good condition so state business can be transacted there.
