Record Group History: Initially created in 1936 as the Mississippi Industrial Commission, the Mississippi Department of Economic and Community Development is tasked with stimulating economic development in the state. The department was originally tasked with maintaining Mississippi’s traditionally agricultural economy while also promoting the growth of industry in order to support the state’s agricultural development and revitalize the state’s economy during the Great Depression. Since its creation the Department has undergone several name changes and seen its responsibilities expand. In 1940, the Mississippi Industrial Commission became the Board of Development before becoming the Mississippi Agricultural and Industrial Board in 1944. In 1979, the Board was reorganized into the Board of Economic Development and given authority over the promotion of new industries in the state as well as tourism. In 1989, the Board was reorganized a final time into its current form as the Department of Economic and Community Development with the same general mission statement of supporting local economic growth while also attracting investments into Mississippi’s economy from outside the state.
