Record Group History: The Governor’s office was created by Mississippi’s first constitution in 1817 to serve as the head of the executive branch of the state government. Some of the office’s duties and powers include vetoing legislation, appointing officials to state level commissions, making budget recommendations, and calling special sessions of the legislature. Additionally, the governor serves as the commander-in-chief of the state army, navy, and militia. The governor is aided by a lieutenant governor who is elected alongside them and possesses the governor’s executive powers when the governor is absent or indisposed. The governor was originally limited to a single term in office until an amendment to the state constitution in 1986 allowed a governor to be reelected for an additional four-year term.
