Series 503: Territorial Auditor Correspondence. 1809-1817.
Creator: Territorial Auditor (RG 3).
Collection Summary: Correspondence (primarily outgoing) pertaining to the ongoing duties of Auditor Parke Walton as he administered the collection and expenditure of monies throughout the territory. The correspondence generally can be classified into three categories: letters accompanying annual reports* to the General Assembly; letters to county tax collectors and assessors requesting completion of their various duties; and letters (often called “Circulars”) to newly appointed county tax officials with information about commissions, oaths of office, bonds and sureties, and instructions regarding their duties.
*The annual reports as well as other enclosures mentioned in these letters are not a part of this series, but are possibly the reports and schedules which can be found in Series 504: “General Assembly Records.”

Record Group History: The Mississippi Territorial Auditor was a positioned created by the Territorial Legislature on March 1, 1806. The Auditor was to be appointed by the Territorial Governor and granted the authority to examine all public accounts for the Mississippi Territory and conduct investigations into the use of the Territory’s funds. The auditor was also authorized to issue treasury warrants for the payment of public debts.
