Creator: Territorial Auditor (RG 3).
Collection Summary: Procedural paperwork required for the Auditor's authorization of payments drawn from the territorial treasury. Among the many services for which payment was certified were fulfilling the offices of justice, juror, clerk, or witness during court sessions; serving as sheriff, constable, jailer, or militia officer; or performing the duties of coroner, census-taker, or Choctaw interpreter. There are numerous certifications for members of the territorial legislative council and general assembly, detailing the number of days attended at each legislative session as well as the number of miles traveled back and forth to the assembly. Other assembly expenses that were certified included the printing of the acts passed at each assembly session, and the furnishing of suitable housing, candles, firewood, and chairs. The materials are arranged alphabetically by subject matter and then by date.

Record Group History: The Mississippi Territorial Auditor was a positioned created by the Territorial Legislature on March 1, 1806. The Auditor was to be appointed by the Territorial Governor and granted the authority to examine all public accounts for the Mississippi Territory and conduct investigations into the use of the Territory’s funds. The auditor was also authorized to issue treasury warrants for the payment of public debts.
