Record Group History: The Confederate records in this record group come from a variety of sources. The bulk of the collection's microfilm consists of copies of service records compiled from original material from the former Confederate states. The Mississippi Department of Archives and History, under the guidance of Dr. Dunbar Rowland, collected from former veterans and other state citizens as much original material as possible. Typed bound volumes were compiled by this Department from its material and material in the War Department's possession. The act which established the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in 1902 provides in section 6: "That the Department is charged with the duty of making special effort to collect data in reference to soldiers from Mississippi in the war between the United States and the Confederate States both from the War Department at Washington and from private individuals, and to cause the same to be prepared for publication as speedily as possible."
