History:

Freedom Song

Freedom Song was a film project by director Phil Alden Robinson. Originally titled, “Mississippi Project,” Robinson wanted to make a film documenting the work of civil rights activist Robert Parris "Bob" Moses. However Moses convinced Robinson that he should focus his attention on the people who provided food and housing to the civil rights workers. Robinson talked with former members of Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), gathering stories that would be worked into the film. Moses and another movement veteran, Charles F. "Chuck" McDew assisted Robinson in developing the screenplay. Turner Network Television financed the film, which premiered on the network in February of 2000.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection contains the extensive research done in preparation for the writing and filming of Freedom Song. The material includes background material on Civil Rights veterans, interview transcripts of workshops held by the filmmakers, background material on Mississippi and the Civil Rights struggle in Mississippi, newspaper and magazine articles, and book excerpts. Also included in the collection are correspondence and reports from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and from Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Of particular focus in the research is material dealing with the events that happened in McComb, Mississippi during the Civil Rights Movement, including the beating of Bob Moses, SNCC representative. Included in the collection is a scene schedule notebook for The Mississippi Project, a working title for the movie that became Freedom Song. The collection spans the years 1959-1998.

The audio-visual portion of this collection consists of video and audio tapes of workshops and interviews done as research for the film, Smithsonian audio tapes, video and audio tapes of the movie and other visual and audio material. The material is from 1961-2000, with the bulk of the material from 1990-1991.  Please note, the audio-visual portion of this collection is unavailable for viewing due to equipment and fragility of the recording.  Discuss with curator to determine if viewing is possible or if digitization in-house or by a vendor is possible, depending on fragility of the recording and availability of vendors.
