Biography:
Lawrence Lazelle Durgin
Lawrence Lazelle Durgin was born June 28, 1918, in Newark, New Jersey, to Delphine Lazelle and Russell Luther Durgin. Russell Durgin was the secretary of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Tokyo, Japan, prior to World War II. The Durgins raised their family, which included two other children, Russell and Helen, in Japan. Lawrence Durgin graduated from the American School in Tokyo in 1937, and after a second senior year of high school in America, attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Upon graduation in 1940, he attended Oberlin College’s Graduate School of Theology (now Vanderbilt Divinity School) in Oberlin, Ohio, and worked as an executive secretary at the Oberlin College YMCA. He graduated in 1944.
Durgin led pastorates in New York and Rhode Island for thirty-six years, culminating in his pastorship of Broadway United Church of Christ in New York City in 1961. The Broadway congregation had a long history of participation in social causes: it hosted abolitionist speeches from Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison and was a stop on the Underground Railroad. During his tenure, Durgin further aligned the church with the Civil Rights Movement: the church sent a busload of members to the 1963 March on Washington. He also opened the ministry to women by bringing in female assistant ministers.
In addition to his pastorates, Durgin sat on several boards. He was the director of the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries of the American Missionary Association. Durgin also served on the boards of the Vanderbilt (Nashville, Tennessee) and Andover Newton Theological (Newton, Massachusetts) schools. In 1961, he became a member of the Tougaloo College Board of Trustees. Durgin was an active fundraiser for the United Church of Christ affiliated schools, which included Tougaloo College in Madison County, Mississippi. An academic chair in Tougaloo’s Department of Religion and Philosophy was endowed in Durgin’s honor in 1967. In 1980, Durgin moved to Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi; resigned from the Tougaloo Board of Trustees; and accepted the position of Vice President for Development at the college.
Durgin married Eunice Baldwin King of Raleigh, North Carolina in 1941. They had two children, Katherine and Wentworth. Lawrence Durgin died August 12, 1981, in Jackson.
