PEMBERTON (JOHN C., III) PAPERS


These two volumes are the papers of John C. Pemberton III, the grandson of Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton who was in command of the Confederate forces at Vicksburg in 1863. One volume is the manuscript (typewritten, carbon copy) of John C. Pemberton's Pemberton, Defender of Vicksburg (Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, 1942, pp. xvi, 350). This volume contains 364 pages. The other volume pertains to the meeting on May 21–22, 1937, of the "Descendants of the Participants of the Campaign, Siege and Defense of Vicksburg," which was attended by John C. Pemberton III and Ulysses S. Grant III, and is entitled "Scrapbook of photographs, newspaper clippings, etc., with reference to Vicksburg reunion, May 21st and 22nd, 1937." This volume also contains some pictures, copies of newspaper articles, and copies of letters back to 1863, and the following letters of interest:
