Microfilm copy must be used.

William W. Humphries, Sr., a Lowndes County planter, soldier, and physician, was born in South Carolina in 1808. Exactly when Humphries came to Mississippi is not known. However, federal census records indicate that he had become a prosperous planter by 1860, possessing real and personal property worth more than $175,000. He served in the Confederate army as captain of Company H, Thirty-Fifth Mississippi Infantry. After the war, Humphries continued to pursue his interests as a planter until his death from a heart attack at his home in Columbus, Mississippi, on July 23, 1877. He was survived by his wife, Mrs. R. A. Humphries, and a number of adult children. His eldest son, William H. Humphries, Jr., served as executor of his estate.
