Claiborne, nephew of William Charles Cole Claiborne and Nathaniel Herbert Claiborne, was born in Natchez, Adams County, on April 24, 1809. He attended public schools in Virginia, later studied law there and was admitted to the Bar in 1825 and began his practice in Natchez. He served as a member of the state House of Representatives 1830–1834; and the 24th Congress, March 4, 1835–March 3, 1837. In 1841, he began his literary career as one of the editors of the Mississippi Free Trader and began his valuable historical collection of material concerning the state. The material is arranged in accordance with the published index which appears in the Journal of Mississippi History, summer edition, 1976.
