SHELL (MARY E. WILKES) PAPERS

Papers of Mary E. Wilkes Shell, of Aberdeen. She was a daughter of William B. and Sarah Ann Wilkes, and the wife of James D. Shell. Five letters are written by Mrs. Shell's cousin, James H. Wilkes, while he was in the Confederate army. One gives an account of the fight and the Confederate retreat at Knoxville in 1863. The volume is a journal kept by Jennie Pendleton of Aberdeen from June 10 through June 25, 1864. The collection also includes the obituaries of Jennie Pendleton Clemmons and her infant daughter; a letter from Mrs. Shell's grandson-in-law, Capt. L. A. Crosby written in 1918; and a facsimile of Washington's account of expenses during the Revolutionary War.
