DAVIS (WILLIAM L.) LETTER


A twelve page letter from William L. Davis to S. W. Smyth, Louisville, which describes the Battle of Fredericksburg. Davis, a native of Massachusetts, enlisted in the Winston Guards, Company A, 13th Mississippi Regiment, at Louisville on March 16, 1861. He saw action in Virginia and Maryland, was in the Battle of Gettysburg and was captured at Knoxville on November 29, 1863. He was sent to Rock Island Barracks, Rock Island, Illinois, and on October 6, 1864, he enlisted in the U. S. Army for frontier service.
