SOUTHERN RAILROAD COMPANY RECORDS

Copy of a resolution passed by the Board of Commissioners of the company, and lists of railroad lands granted to the state and subject to sale at offices at Augusta and Columbus. The Southern Railroad Company was organized in 1846 to build a line from Brandon through Meridian to the Mississippi-Alabama state line, with William C. Smedes at the first president. The entire line was completed in June 1861. After the Civil War the company was reorganized as the Vicksburg and Meridian Railroad. On February 1, 1889, it was sold under foreclosure to the owners of the Queen & Crescent, and on March 18 was reorganized as the Alabama & Vicksburg Railway.
