WHARTON (F. A. R.) PAPERS


Miscellaneous papers of Francis A. R. Wharton. Wharton and his brother, Thomas Jesse, were law partners in Raymond from 1842 until October 1882, when the latter was appointed judge of the Ninth Judicial District.

The papers include bills of sale for slaves, three letters written during the Civil War to his wife, and papers relating to the collection of taxes in Hinds County. Wharton was Confederate States tax collector for Hinds County, 1861–1863.

The volumes are a ledger (July 1862; November 23, 1865–July 4, 1892) and a day book (January 1, 1872–November 21, 1887).
