NUGENT (WILLIAM L.) LETTERS
Correspondence of William Lewis Nugent (1823–1897) to his wife, Eleanor Fulkerson Smith Nugent. A native of Louisiana, Nugent practiced law in Greenville and Jackson. During the early months of the Civil War, he served as inspector-general for the state of Mississippi. He resigned in 1862 and entered the Confederate Army as a private in Company D, Eighteenth Mississippi Regiment. He was promoted to captain and was transferred to General S. W. Ferguson's staff. The item for 1896 is a broadside, "Col. Nugent's Letter. He Answers the Charges Made by Governor McLaurin," which pertains to his connection in a case involving township rights in south Mississippi.
