RODNEY (THOMAS) PAPERS

Letter of Thomas Rodney who was born at St. Jones' Neck, Delaware, June 4, 1744, and was appointed a Judge and Land Commissioner of the Mississippi Territory, West of the Pearl River, July 17, 1803, by President Jefferson. He arrived in Natchez, Mississippi, December 1, 1803, the date his commissions took effect. Most of the letters are written by Rodney under the pen name of "Hermes." These letters deal with early American politics; there are also several letters to people who owed Rodney money. One letter, "To Government and People of Great Brittain [sic]," defends American rights for which the War of 1812 was fought. Also contained in these papers is a book of poems written by Rodney.
