CLAYTON (W. L.) REMINISCENCES
MDAH has only microfilm. (MF Roll # 36075)
Microfilm copy of typescript reminiscences of Colonel W. L. Clayton, originally published at irregular intervals in The Tupelo Journal in 1905, 1906 and 1907. Colonel Clayton was born December 22, 1836, and died in 1921. His youth was spent in that part of Itawamba County which was later used to form part of Lee County. Many subjects are covered in these articles, and of particular interest are the pieces dealing with the early methods of farming, the first schools in that area of Mississippi, and the early medical and legal professions. The short biographical sketches of friends of his youth, during the Civil War, and in later years are of interest, as well as numerous anecdotes concerning these friends. Colonel Clayton was a lover of nature, and describes the birds, flora and fauna of that area during the early years.
