VERNON-MCGEHEE PAPERS
Papers consist principally of letters from William Rousseau Cox Vernon of Natchez, Mississippi, to his wife, Rowena (Crane) Vernon. Mrs. Vernon taught at Elizabeth Academy in 1833–1834, prior to her marriage; early items in this collection consist of invitations to "Miss Crane." Tombstone inscriptions form the Family Record Book of the late Misses Rowena and Mildred Hamilton, Natchez, who were granddaughters of Mr. and Mrs. William Vernon, are of interest.
Other letters are from Mr. and Mrs. James Bard to Mr. and Mrs. Vernon. Mrs. Bard, nee May McGuire, was a ward of W. R. C. Vernon. Of special interest are a letter from Mrs. Bard, and one from Mr. Vernon describing the Natchez tornado of May 7, 1840, just after it occurred.
A portion of this collection is available on microfilm. (MF Roll # 36083)
