MCGEHEE FAMILY PAPERS (18541874)
Photostatic copies of letters and a plantation journal of the McGehee family, Wilkinson County, Mississippi: one letter is from Elizabeth Percy to her son-in-law, Harry Trumbull McGehee, two letters are from Mrs. Edward John McGehee to her son Harry (Hal), and one letter is from Edward McGehee to his half-brother, Micajah McGehee, in California, where he had settled after accompanying Fremont on his fourth expedition west.
The plantation journal was kept by A. J. Vance, overseer of the Western View Plantation, for the year 1859, with one page headed "plantation expenses for 1866." According to the donor of the journal, Western View Plantation was located near Port Hudson, Louisiana, or in Wilkinson County, Mississippi and was owned by the McGehee family. The entries in the journal cover the weather, amounts of cotton picked by certain slaves, and an account of daily routine tasks around the plantation.
