COOPER (JANIE DRAKE) COLLECTION

Original manuscript of "A Century of Progress in the Higher Education of Women," a pageant by Mrs. Janie Drake Cooper (1875–1963), for over 20 years head of the English Department and Dean at Whitworth College, Brookhaven. Mrs. Cooper, wife of Dr. I. W. Cooper, President of Whitworth College, was the granddaughter of the Reverend B. M. Drake, early leader of Methodism in Mississippi and President and Trustee of Elizabeth Academy, Washington. The pageant, written to celebrate the Diamond Anniversary of Whitworth College, was presented in the Court of States, Century of Progress Exposition, Chicago, Illinois, September 23, 1933, and at the College on November 17, 1933. The scrapbook has letters to Mrs. Cooper, newspaper clippings, and other memorabilia. Seven of the items (1896–1913) are copies of letters commending Miss Drake as a student and teacher. The 1962 letter is from Mrs. Cooper to Mrs. Thomas D. Hendrix.
