BUIE FAMILY PAPERS
Biography/History:
Prentiss Buie's father came to what is now Lincoln County, Mississippi, and settled in the northwestern portion near Caseyville. They erected a hand-hewn log residence which was occupied by the members of the Buie family until it was destroyed by fire. Prentiss Buie married Emma McRee, who lived on an adjoining place. Buie's mother was a McLaurin and when she died was the last surviving member of the Presbyterian Church at Union Church.
There were nine children born to Prentiss Buie and his wife. Joseph Buie studied law at the University of Mississippi, but later became a Methodist preacher and afterwards a Congregationalist preacher. He died in Illinois in a train accident. Miss Hallie Buie attended a Presbyterian girls school at Holly Springs and later finished at Lexington. She also attended the Industrial Institute and College, at Columbus, Mississippi. Desiring to be a missionary, she attended Scarrit College in Kansas City. She finished about 1908, and in 1909 she went to Korea and taught school at Wonsan, where she remained for five years. She was then transferred to Seoul, where she remained and taught school until 1940 when she was forced to retire on account of her health. She returned to Mississippi and lived with her sister in Mississippi City until 1944 when she moved to Brookhaven, where she died in 1949.
