MIDDLETON (ELLIS SCATTERGOOD, SR.) PAPERS
Ellis Scattergood Middleton, Sr., the son of Aaron and Martha (Scattergood) Middleton was born in 1831. He had three sons and one daughter, the wife of J. W. Lane of Jackson. During the Civil War, the senior Ellis Middleton was a colonel in the Confederate army. He served as treasurer of Hinds County for four years. For a number of years, he was a member of the Hinds County Board of Supervisors, serving as president for most of the time. Ellis Middleton, Sr., died in 1908. This collection of Middleton papers is mainly family correspondence. Included is correspondence between the following individuals: Ellis Middleton, Sr., and his mother, Martha, 1863; Ellis Middleton, Sr., and his wife (name unknown); Ellis Middleton, Jr., and his mother; Ellis Middleton, Jr., and his children, 1878–1930; Mary (Ellis Sr.'s sister) and her mother, 1869–70; James S. Baskin (an uncle) and Mary (Ellis Sr.'s sister), 1876; Celeb S. Middleton (Ellis Sr.'s brother) and his brother and sister (1870–1911). In addition the collection contains news clippings, certificates, invitations concerning the family, pictures of the family, a high school report card dated 1881, grammar school reports, 1878–1880, a shot horn (in museum) belonging to Ellis Jr., miscellaneous material, a family bible, and two published books.
