BOND (WILLARD F.) COLLECTION
Willard F. Bond was born in western Stone County on February 22, 1876, and was raised in the home of Laomi Batson. He attended local one-room schools and began teaching himself at the age of sixteen. Bond taught for five years and graduated from Purvis High School in 1897. He served as principal of Wiggins High School from 1902 to 1912. Bond was head of the History and Latin departments at Mississippi Normal College (University of Southern Mississippi) from 1912 to 1916. Governor Theodore G. Bilbo appointed him as Mississippi Superintendent of Education in 1916. Bond served in this post until he became first director of the Mississippi Department of Public Welfare in 1936. He retired from public office in 1955. Bond was married to the former Susie Graham.
