SHELDON (GEORGE L.) PAPERS


George Sheldon was born in Nehawka, Nebraska and spent his boyhood on a farm. He received a degree at the University of Nebraska and later was graduated cum laude at Harvard. Sheldon first came to Mississippi as Captain of Company B of the 3rd Nebraska Volunteer Infantry commanded by Colonel William Jennings Bryan. His unit passed through the Mississippi Delta enroute to Cuba for the Spanish American War in 1898. Four years later, he purchased a 1,700-acre plantation south of Greenville.

While in Mississippi, he served in the House of Representatives and was a member of the Confederate Pension Board of Washington County. In 1927, Sheldon organized the Republican Party of Mississippi and in several campaigns was an unsuccessful candidate for governor and congress. He was Collector of Internal Revenue in Mississippi for four years during the 1920s.
