FRANKLIN STORE PAPERS
President Andrew Jackson sold a tract of land in Holmes County, Mississippi, to settlers from Alabama, South Carolina, and Virginia in 1836. This land sale actually took place at Mount Salus (now Clinton), Hinds County, Mississippi. The town of Franklin, located a few miles southeast of Lexington, Holmes County, was incorporated on February 27, 1836. It was named for Benjamin Franklin. Virginia native James Davis Powers opened a two-story general merchandise store in Franklin in 1870.
