MISSISSIPPI YMCA RECORDS

The first organizations of Young Men's Christian Associations in America were formed in Montreal and Boston in 1851, following the plan of a society organized in England in 1844. Although an effort was made in Jackson as early as April 6, 1860, to organize a Young Men's Christian Association, the present Young Men's Christian Association came into being at a meeting held in the First Baptist Church, on April 9, 1905. The formal charter was issued to the Young Men's Christian Association on December 14, 1906. Since that time, the YMCA has been a vital part of Jackson's progress as a Christian community.
