JONES (JOHN G.) JOURNAL

MDAH only has microfilm. (MF Roll #s 36173)

Reverend John G. Jones was the pioneer Methodist historian in Mississippi and his monumental work is the foundation of all Methodist history in this section. While he labored under the disadvantages of his day, before modern transportation had made travel and correspondence easy, he had, nevertheless, the very great advantage of having lived during that period in the existence of the Methodist Conference in Mississippi about which he wrote. His works entitled A Concise History of the Introduction of Protestantism into Mississippi and the Southwest, published in 1866, and A Complete History of Methodism As Connected with the Mississippi Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, published in 1887, are sources of authentic information which can be used without hesitation concerning their dependability. This collection contains a journal compiled by Reverend Jones, March 9, 1835–September 6, 1836.
