NEILSON (JOHN ABERT) COLLECTION


John Abert Neilson was born on April 13, 1842, at Belmont, the Neilson home nine miles north of Columbus. He was the son of William Walker Neilson and Louisa Abert Neilson. He was a member of the 14th Regiment of the Mississippi Infantry, CSA, and served as a private in Company K, known as the Columbus Riflemen, which was mustered into state service at Columbus on April 15, 1861. On April 25, 1862, he was commissioned a captain. In 1866, Mr. Neilson went to France and studied medicine. Shortly afterwards his father died, and he had to return home to look after the plantation. On April 13, 1871, he married Eliza Lucy Irion, and they lived at Wildwood, which was in the neighborhood of Belmont. This collection contains two volumes of notes on pharmacy, compiled by John Abert Neilson, 1871–1872.
