PORT GIBSON FEMALE COLLEGE PAPERS
The early history of the Port Gibson Female College is obscured by the years. The land on which the college stood was sold in 1829 to the Trustees of Clinton Academy. In 1842, it was brought by Henry T. Ellet. The school at this time was under the control of Presbyterians, but so much was spent building the main brick building that the debt forced the Trustees to sell the property to a new set of men, chiefly Methodists. In 1854, the property sold to the Port Gibson Collegiate Academy. Subsequently, the property was deeded to the Methodist Episcopal Church in October 1869. The name was changed to the Port Gibson Female College in November 1881. By decree of the Mississippi Methodist Conference in November 1927, the Port Gibson Female College automatically went out of existence in May of 1928.
Included in this collection are a letter dated June 15, 1813 from William Turpin (Washington, MT) to Thomas B. Turpin (Centerville, MD); the articles of agreement and association between the proprietors of the Port Gibson Academy, September 11, 1843; a minute book of the proprietors and board of trustees of the Port Gibson Female College, April 3, 1844–May 8, 1908; and a list of graduates, 1855–1892.
A portion of this collection is available on microfilm. (MF Roll # 36176)
