DRAKE (WINBOURNE MAGRUDER) PAPERS


Winbourne Magruder Drake was born at Magnolia Springs, Jefferson County, Mississippi, on October 25, 1874. He was the son of James Perry and Claribel Drake. Drake was a graduate of Centenary College and later became active in the cotton business. He served as secretary of the Mississippi Compress and Southern Cotton Shippers associations. Drake was a member of the Memphis and New York cotton exchanges until his retirement in 1927. He was also a farmer and cattleman and one of the earliest breeders of Aberdeen Angus cattle in the state. Drake was elected as president of the board of trustees of Jefferson Military College in 1950, serving until 1956.
