MORSE (WILLIAM EUGENE) PAPERS


William Eugene Morse was born in Newton, Mississippi, on December 1, 1891. He received his early education in local public schools and later graduated from Gulfport High School. Morse attended Millsaps College and received a bachelor of science degree in 1913. He received a bachelor of laws degree from the University of Mississippi in 1915 and later completed additional legal coursework at Columbia University. Morse began practicing law in Jackson in 1916. He was also city attorney for sixteen years and the author of a number of Jackson ordinances and Mississippi Legal Forms, Annotated. Morse occasionally served as a special chancellor or circuit judge. He was also vice-president of the Mississippi State Bar Association, president of the Jackson Young Mens Christian Association, and a member of the board of trustees of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Morse was also a Master Mason and Shriner, a member of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce, and listed in Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
