POSEY (CARNOT) AND FAMILY LETTERS

Carnot Posey, second son of John B. and Elizabeth Scriven Posey, was born in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, on August 5, 1818. His education was conducted chiefly by his father, until, at about the age of sixteen, he was sent to college in Jackson, Louisiana. In 1836 he became a law student at the University of Virginia. In 1840 he married Miss Mary Collins of Adams County, who died in 1844. Mr. Posey served in the Mexican War as a lieutenant in Company B of the 1st Mississippi Regiment, which was commanded by Jefferson Davis. In 1849 he married Jane White of Wilkinson County. When the Southern States withdrew from the Union, Carnot formed the "Wilkinson Rifles," which later became a part of the 16th Mississippi. He served gallantly as a Confederate soldier until he received a wound at Bristoe Station on October 14, 1863, from which he never recovered.
