HALBERT (HENRY S.) MANUSCRIPT
Henry S. Halbert was born in Pickens, Alabama, in 1837, and became a well known historian and archaeologist. Halbert wrote several books and articles, many of them concerning the Choctaw Indians. The collection contains a manuscript (18 pp.) entitled "Tecumseh Among the Choctaws." It is an account of Tecumseh's visit in 1811 to the Choctaw Nation to gain support for an Indian confederacy to join with the British in their war against the United States. This manuscript was published as chapter 3 in The Creek War of 1813 and 1814 by Halbert and T. N. Ball. Included in the collection is a letter to a "Prof. Sims" from Halbert, dated June 6, 1872, discussing the paper on Tecumseh which he apparently sent to the Mississippi Historical Society for safekeeping.
