Z 1662.000 Leathers (Thomas P., Jr.) Scrapbook

T. P. Leathers was born in Kentucky on May 24, 1816. Leathers began his steamboat career in 1836 on the Yazoo River with his brother John Leathers. In 1845 Leathers built the first of the famous series of steamers called Natchez. In all there were nine steamers built by Leathers named Natchez, the most famous being Natchez number six, made famous by the race with the Robert E. Lee from New Orleans to St. Louis.

This scrapbook contains newspaper clippings taken from newspapers of the 1880s and 1890s; however, some of the clippings are as early as 1869 or as late as 1902. The clippings focus on riverboat news, obituaries of riverboat captains, wrecks of riverboats and a large portion of the clippings concern T. P. Leathers and his sons. The clippings are not arranged in any discernible order in the scrapbook.
