CROSS (WILLIAM) JOURNAL

William Cross was an Episcopal priest serving the Diocese of Mississippi from 18821895, having been ordained at Christ Church, Vicksburg, on April 23, 1882. The Journal of the Diocese of Mississippi (1882) in its List of Clergy shows Rev. Cross "missionary at Bolton, Bovina, etc." The 1883 Journal lists Rev. Cross as rector of the Church of the Mediator, Meridian. The 1884 Journal shows that he was also rector at St. Mary's Church, Enterprise. The 1885 Journal lists him as rector at St. James' Church, Greenville, a post he was to retain until 1895. The journals from 1896 on do not mention Rev. Cross, so it is presumed that his service with the Diocese of Mississippi was ended.

This volume contains a variety of information on activity in the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi for the decade 18811891. Included are sections listing sermons and texts (18811884; 18861890); a list of services performed (18871891); cash reports (18821883; 1890); institutions of new fraternal lodges and related matters (18901891); burials, baptisms, confirmations and marriages (18811891); a diary with daily entries (January 1, 1882August 15, 1883); parish assessments for bishop's salary (18871888); and receipts and expenses (18821883). Because Rev. Cross traveled a circuit for the Bolton-Bovina mission field, the daily entries in his diary reflect weather, travel conditions, meetings with various individuals, as well as church activities. In listing the various church offices he conducted, Rev. Cross provided much genealogical information concerning births, deaths and marriages.
