RESEARCH CLUB (JACKSON, MISS.) RECORDS

The Research Club of Jackson was organized in the Ladies' Parlor of the New Capitol Building in Jackson on November 7, 1908. This woman's organization was formed along broad lines for literary and artistic purposes. The programs at each meeting are devoted to the study of some cultural aspect, and, as service projects, the club has supported cash awards and scholarships to encourage the development of literary and artistic talents. Once each year, the club has Original Day, a program when club members present original compositions. As a woman's club, the Research Club has joined the various local, state and national club federations and remains active at those levels.

These records document the history of the Research Club from its beginnings to 1979. The various constitutions, bylaws and amendments are preserved. The diversity of the programs over the years is shown in the yearbooks and in the special documents. Literary creations of the members are included, as is a historical pageant (1923) written by Susie V. Powell. Notes and essays by various club historians are included, and a number of awards and citations indicate the wide range of activity the club has been involved in.
