PARKER (JOHN) COLLECTION

MDAH only has microfilm. (MF Roll # 36336)

Captain John Parker of Prescott, Arkansas, was a member of the Confederate army who was captured and imprisoned at Johnson's Island Military Prison, Ohio, in the winter of 1863–1864. This collection consists of one volume of signatures of 309 prisoners at Johnson's Military Prison, Ohio. Apparently Parker passed the book around and asked each man to sign his name, rank, military unit, hometown, and place of capture. The book is inscribed "Johnson's Island, January 28, 1864," and signatures are dated from then through February 2, 1864. The cover and some pages are missing from front and back. Photocopies of the volume were made in 1981 and a typescript of each page was made under the reproduction. This photocopy edition is indexed: hometown by state; place of capture by state. Also included is a newsclipping from the May 10, 1981, Mississippi Gulf Coast The Sun The Daily Herald about the volume.
