PONTOTOC COUNTY BICENTENNIAL COMMISSION PAPERS
The Pontotoc County Bicentennial Commission was formed to prepare the county for the national Bicentennial celebration in 1976. The leaders of the Commission were Mrs. Willie Mae Sneed Pound and Mrs. Mae Harris Owens, who acted as co-chairpersons. The Mayor of Pontotoc, Howard Stafford, also served on the Commission. During 1976 and 1977 the Commission organized Bicentennial Day for May 28, 1976, a wagon train through Pontotoc, the dedication ceremony for the Old Natchez Trace Park, an arts and crafts show, a July 2, 1976 pageant, the dedication of a time capsule on July 5, 1977, and the search for the writing of a history of Pontotoc County.
The material in this collection covers the activities of the Pontotoc County Bicentennial Commission for 1976 and 1977. Reports and programs are the items in the collection. These documents provide information on the Commission members, their activities, and the expenses incurred during the Bicentennial Celebration.
